Hey, it's Josh. If a search for "games like Warcraft 1" or "90s RTS browser game" is what brought you here, good — that's exactly who this page is for. Here's the honest version, not the marketing one.

Games Like Warcraft 1? Let's Compare.

A quick history of the genre, and where Age of Combat fits in it

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans came out in 1994, and by today's standards it wasn't a big game. Two small, mirrored armies. One economy built on two resources, gold and lumber. A handful of unit types, a keep to defend, and a keep across the fog to go raze. You could finish a full match in the time it takes to eat lunch, and it still managed to kick off an entire genre.

Everything that came after got bigger. Warcraft II added factions, naval combat, and a real campaign. Command & Conquer, coming out of the Westwood lineage that Dune II started, leaned hard into FMV cutscenes and sprawling base-building. Age of Empires stretched the whole idea across centuries of history. All good games. But the specific thing that made the original click — a tight two-army skirmish where the only real decisions are gold, lumber, and which unit to train next — mostly got left behind as the genre grew up and grew bigger.

Age of Combat is built for people who want that small thing back, not a modern epic. It's a free browser strategy game: one map, you against one AI, no multiplayer queue, no expansion packs, no installer. You put peasants to work mining gold and chopping lumber, raise footmen and archers, research catapults if the match runs long enough, and go raze the enemy keep before they raze yours. A match runs about as long as the original ones did.

To be clear: this isn't a clone, and it isn't affiliated with Blizzard, Westwood, or anyone else who made the games above. It's a browser-native homage, built from scratch in TypeScript and Canvas2D by someone who put a lot of hours into the originals and wanted that specific feeling back on a modern machine, in a tab, with nothing to install. If "90s RTS" is the itch, this is aimed at the exact same spot Warcraft 1 was.
